An idiom my father once told me:

"Imagine sitting at a large dining table, which is filled with people in all of its seats. Before anyone has touched the table, to the left and right of every person will be a napkin.

In a sense, both napkins are yours until the first person decides to take one. However, if someone were to claim the napkin to their right, then the person next to them will have no choice but to claim the napkin on their right as well.

This cycle continues, and everyone at the table will take the napkin on their right, simply because that was the decision that the first person made.

This is the cycle of politics, everything is uncertain in the world until someone decides to take the first napkin."
